Joseph was in the dining room on 26 April 1887 in Central City.10 He was “preparing to go to the mine after breakfast,” so he “took down a box of giant caps from the top of a high cupboard.”11 The box was “placed upon the dining table.”12 It contained “ninety-two caps of seventy-five pounds resistance each.”11

“The entire box exploded.”11 “The force of the explosion shattered the furniture into splinters.”10 Joseph was “horribly mangled.”13 “His left hand was blown off at the wrist, and the fingers of the right hand were torn off. Several pieces of the caps penetrated his bowels, and his face was shockingly burned.”12 He survived for “about ten hours,” and “he died in intense agony.”11
